We Design for All of Life’s Moments Big and Small

We know that you know what you want and need when it comes to your home design, but finding the words to explain it all can sometimes feel impossible. Let us guess—when it comes to describing what you want does it sound something like this?

“I hate my kitchen because it’s dark and I have no space for my baking and pantry items. I need more storage and counter space, but I just don’t think it can fit with the current kitchen layout. How do I do this? Help!”

Function is in our design vocabulary.

If your current interior design doesn’t match your needs and just feels old and outdated, we can help.

Designing with storage and space in mind is our number one priority. Because you deserve to have a home that works for everyone in it. We’re talking about space for your kids’ arts & crafts, room for your cookbooks, shelving for special family heirlooms, a tucked away reading nook, more than one bathroom for a family of four, and all the room you could imagine for hosting holidays with guests. And we also think about the details that count—good lighting so you can read a favorite bedtime story one more time, a laundry room that works so you can get an extra load in when you need to, and updating the roomy basement since you know your family would love another hangout spot.

We Get to Know Each Other

First, we need to find out who we are and see if we’re a fit! In-person meetings are always great—we get to chat about your renovation goals and take a look at the space you want to transform. And fear not—I travel often so even if I’m not based in your state or country, I can get to you. I’ve worked on designs from New York to Miami and in Europe! Plus, if the pandemic’s taught us anything, it’s that we can Zoom too.

We Talk Design Must-Haves

During our design meeting, we will talk about your vision, your overall style, your color palette, your design must-haves, and your budget. This is the time to share all of the things—bring on the magazine cutouts and Pinterest boards! And I will guide you through the process of figuring out your vision and defining your style. After our conversation, I will walk through your space, take pictures, and complete a survey.

I Start to Design Your Space

This is where the fun starts because I get to design your space! I get to work on your CAD drawings, reimagine the layout, source materials and finishes, order samples, and put together mood boards. This step typically takes 2-4 weeks, depending on how extensive the project scope is. Once the drawings and mood boards are complete and I’ve gathered all the samples, we’ll find a time to schedule a Design Presentation.

We Schedule a Design Presentation

During the Design Presentation (which can be done in person or via Zoom), you’ll receive a set of CAD drawings (in a PDF format). We’ll also go through the design proposal page by page—looking at all of the samples and finishes and diving into the mood boards, envisioning your new home together. The goal of the presentation is to get your feedback and finalize as many items as possible to move to the next phase.

I Complete the Design

After the Design Presentation, I will work on revisions, solidify your layout selections, price materials, and add important details and notes to the drawings. I also build a comprehensive spreadsheet, which will be useful for you or your contractor, detailing every material that needs to be purchased, including descriptions, manufacturer product numbers, dimensions, colors/finishes, quantities, prices, and ordering instructions, as well as the total price for all materials. This step could take another 1-3 weeks, depending on the size of the project and the amount of revisions that need to be done.

Your Design Gets Delivered

Once all of the materials and drawings are approved, I will send over your final mood boards, material spreadsheet, and a final set of drawings that you can pass on to the general contractor on your project. Our detailed and technical design drawings make it that much easier for contractors to price projects as they provide the exact dimensions and material specifications needed, so there’s no margin for error when work begins.

The Benefits of Hiring an Interior Designer

Working with an interior designer will help you have a space that you love and cherish and it will also eliminate delays during construction and reduce the need for unexpected and costly change orders. All in, you’re saving more than you realize by hiring an interior designer. We:

  • Figure out the details so you don’t have to—sparing you from having to make a last-minute selection of backsplash tile because the tile crew is scheduled to start.

  • Show you how important decision-making is—case in point, when choosing an oven you need to know where electrical outlets will be located, what voltage they should be, if a gas supply is needed, how it impacts the cabinetry layout, etc.

  • Clearly communicate your needs because home construction shouldn’t be a game of telephone, and you wanting a “deck” shouldn’t be interpreted as a “treehouse.”

Interior designers are the ones who will create the plan that the tradesmen and craftsmen will need when building or renovating because the project, and everyone’s sanity, depends on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When it comes to a build or renovation, here’s how these roles are broken out and how we all work together to create the home of your dreams.

General Contractors: They make sure that materials are ordered and that renovation is running smoothly. They obtain construction permits (if necessary), manage construction sites, take care of construction debris removal, and schedule individual trade crews. They are there to make sure your vision is executed without you having to worry or physically supervise the tradesmen.

Architects: They prepare structural drawings to be approved by the building department when building new construction. Unless you’re planning to do major structural changes, you don’t usually need an architect for home renovations as they typically work on the “bigger picture” and aren’t focused on kitchen cabinetry layout, bathroom accessory locations, etc.

Interior Designers: We create the technical drawings used by tradesmen to execute the job accurately. We go into tedious detail about cabinetry layout and we don’t sleep until we’ve figured out your sink placement. We help you select materials, finishes, and colors—we obsess over wall paint and tile layout, put recessed lights into an immaculate grid, and give you an organized order list.

Interior Decorators: They don’t deal with any of the technical construction elements or provide CAD drawings, but they are there to help you select the right furniture, rugs, window treatments, artwork, and decorative accessories.

  • Every project is completely unique, and my design is tailored to the specific needs, wishes, and budget of the client. On top of that, every house has its own set of challenges and quirks so the journey of turning a house into your dream home will always look different. To inquire more about pricing, please contact me.

  • The length of the interior design process varies and depends on different factors within the project scope. For example, are we just renovating your kitchen or the whole house with layout changes? Depending on the scope, we take into consideration lead times (some samples take longer to get to me), your decision-making ability (some clients need more time to finalize their material decisions), and unexpected things that are out of our control. Typically, the entire interior design process can be completed within 4-8 weeks and more complex projects may take about 3 months to finalize.

  • The sooner, the better! Once the design is finalized, you or your contractor can begin ordering materials and applying for construction permits (if required). Note that material lead times can be long, especially for items like kitchen cabinetry, appliances or windows (expect three months or longer), and the permit process could also take several months. This means you should start working with an interior designer up to six months before your target construction start date (or sooner for complex projects such as renovations involving structural changes, additions, architectural/structural detailing, Historic Preservation Commission approvals, or zoning variances). Rule of thumb—if you would like to do your renovation over the summer break when the kids are out of school and you can temporarily relocate to a summer rental, contact me after the holidays.

  • What I can share is that the way in which I work removes any fear or doubt from the process because I want you to know that you can feel confident and courageous in your choices. I also know what it’s like to renovate while juggling children, house chores, and work, so I always aim to make my designs more minimalistic and I lean toward more simple layouts. But having a minimalistic approach doesn’t mean that your space will be lacking in personality! On the contrary—I know design is purposeful, and I work to pull out all of those personal details and meaningful touches that matter most and help to pull your vision together and make your dream home come to life.
